Godfrey, First Elden Lord, is one of the main bosses in Elden Ring. He is not an optional boss, which means you need to defeat him to continue your game in Elden Ring.

Godfrey is hard to be against, I mean at least a lot of players have suffered for a long time. I will show you some tips for this battle so you can defeat it relatively easily.

Introduction of Godfrey

Godfrey, First Elden Lord must be fought twice. The first is Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Golden Shade), a variant of Godfrey at Erdtree Sanctuary, and the second is in flesh at Elden Throne. I will introduce you to the second battle with him, because his Golden Shade is just an introductory battle that is incomplete, only including his first stage.

Godfrey has two stages in the battle with us. Godfrey, First Elden Lord is in his first stage, and he will turn into Hoarah Loux, Warrior when he loses about 50% of his health.

Preparing for the Battle

Before the battle, you need to get yourself some powerful Elden Ring Runes. Godfrey only deals physical damage, so you do not need to prepare for magic protection. Just get yourself the highest physical damage protection armor.

For your weapons, I recommend you equip yourself with high-damage weapons, and high attack speed is important because you do not have much time and opportunities to attack him, take your chances.

For spells, I think anything that can be cast quickly will be fine, such as Glintstone Icecrag. A magic sword like Adula's Moonblade is also a good choice if you have one. Godfrey is weak on Scarlet Rot, so equip Rotten Breath or Ekzyke's Decay as your Faith builds should work well.

Godfrey and Hoarah Loux are both fast, and it's hard to avoid his attack, so I recommend you use Spirit Ashes to summon your allies to help you. They will distract his attention and buy you some time, giving you more opportunities to attack.

Godfrey, First Elden Lord

Godfrey mainly attacks by using his axe at this stage. Godfrey will jump up and throw the axe, then crash down and drag his axe as he dashes at you. When he is near you, he will pull the axe out of the ground and attack you. You need to avoid his attack. No tips on this, just run.

There are other attacks. He will swing his axe several times, then hit the ground, which will cause a big fissure, and then deal AOE damage by pulling the axe out soon. Be prepared for this. You need to leave his area of attack when he drops his axe. Godfrey may start another attack after that, stomping on the ground and causing rocks to spike out toward you in a cone formation. It's not too hard to avoid, but you need to catch the moment when his foot is down. You can jump to Godfrey and launch your attack.

If you keep a distance from Godfrey while he's about 75% healthy, he will lift his leg for a longer time than before and slam down on the ground. This will cause a shock wave in the area, and you can roll to avoid this attack, but it must be at the right time. This attack has a long recovery time. It's your chance to attack him.

As the battle continues, Godfrey will kill his partner Serosh, a lion, and then discard his axe and armor. Now the battle has come to the second stage, Hoarah Loux, Warrior.

Hoarah Loux, Warrior

At this stage, Hoarah Loux will start with a run at you and try to catch you, then throw in the air and hit you to the ground if he catches you. He may also wind up running towards you with his arm back and try to catch your throat, throw you in the air, and hit you back to the ground. Both types of attacks can be avoided by moving to the side.

His other attacks include swiping at you twice with his claws, after a short time launching seven attacks, which can hardly be avoided. Try to run away when you avoid his first two attacks.

Then he will shout and knock you down with no harm. Soon he jumps up and drops to you with both hands and slams into the ground. This will cause AOE damage and ground cover in the craters, which will erupt later, and you need to leave the crater's area before that.

These are his attacks in the second stage. It will also stomp on the ground and cause rocks to spike out toward you, just like in the first stage. When he loses his health to about 25%, he will also lift his leg for a longer time and slam down on the ground, causing a shock wave in the area, but he will do it twice this time. Be careful.

The battle with Godfrey will be easier if you can time his attack well. All his attacks have obvious premonitions. It is hard to defeat him at once, but not too hard after trying several times.

After you defeat Godfrey, you will receive Remembrance of Hoarah Loux as a reward. Remembrance of Hoarah Loux can be used to get Axe of Godfrey or Ash of War: Hoarah Loux's Earthshaker. Now you can continue your journey in the Elden Ring.
