Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has been released and you may be wondering how to access this expansion. It’s actually pretty simple. You just have to defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood. This is a tough boss to beat, but I’m here to guide you and give you some tips on how to get past him.
In this guide, I’ll show you how to find and defeat Mohg, as well as find the best early weapons to poke at his pain points. Without further ado, let’s get straight into it!
Reaching Mohgwyn Palace
First, I’m going to show you how to get to Mohgwyn Palace. There are a few ways to get there.
Visiting Consecrated Snowfield
If you’re in the late game or have already finished the main game, you can visit Consecrated Snowfield where you can reach this location. There, you’ll find a portal that takes you directly into Mohg’s realm. From there, you can easily climb up to Palace to find Mohg.
Finding Secret Medallion
If you can’t access Consecrated Snowfield area, then you will need to get Secret Medallion. This Medallion consists of two parts.
The first part you will find in Village of the Albinaurics. After running up the mountain directly from Sites of Grace, you can simply go around behind the enemy here or defeat him directly. Then walk to the right, where you will see a pot. If you hit the pot, there will be a man inside. You can kill him or talk to him, and then you will receive the first part of Medallion.
For the second part of Medallion, you can go to Castle Sol and find it in Mountaintops of the Giants. There you must defeat the final boss. After defeating him, you can take the elevator up to Castle, where you will find the second part.
Then you have to go to Grand Lift of Rold. When Hoist Medallion option appears, do not activate it, but switch to Secret Medallion, which will unlock Consecrated Snowfield area.
Completing White Mask Varre Questline
Now, if you haven’t gotten that far yet, or you’re starting a New Game, there’s another easy and quick way to get to Mohgwyn Palace.
That’s with the help of White Mask Varre NPC. You’ll find this NPC at the beginning of your journey. You don’t necessarily need to talk to him at that point in time, but later on, after you’ve progressed a little through the game, you’ll find him in front of Rose Church.
There, if you talk to him, he’ll give you a couple of Festering Bloody Fingers, and these will let you invade other players. Anyway. You don’t need to actually win the battle. You just need to invade three times.
If you talk to Varre again, he’ll offer Lord of Blood’s Favor. This is the cloth item that you need to soak in Maiden Blood. This quest will feel like trying to complete a scavenger hunt designed by a psychopath.
Anyway, the quickest way to get Maiden Blood is to go to Church of Inhibition. When you get there, you’ll be invaded by an enemy, and you can either defeat him or run past him and get Maiden Blood.
Finally, return to Varre and offer your Finger. If you immediately talk to him again, he’ll give you Pureblood Knight’s Medal. This item allows you to teleport directly to Mohgwyn Palace.
Farming Weapon
Now let’s talk about how to defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood. You can use pretty much any weapon, but I find that Ranged Weapons make it easier.
The best early weapon I found was Halo Scythe, which is really good. It releases a circle of shimmering auras that hover for a moment before slamming forward and slamming into the enemy’s face, as if deciding which unfortunate soul to bless with holy damage.
To find Halo Scythe, head to Inner Aeonia Site of Grace. There will be some Knights spawning in the middle of the swamp. You have to defeat them to have a chance to get the weapon dropped.
The drop rate is pretty low right now though, and it took me about 2-3 hours to get this drop. So I would recommend investing in some Elden Ring Runes to increase your Item Discovery to get it faster.
But luckily, they also drop their armor pieces. So while farming for weapons, you’ll also get the best defensive gear in the early game.
Heading To Swamp Of Aeonia
Next, we need to head to Swamp of Aeonia. An easy way to do this is to go directly from where you start the game, and then go to this location on the map with the old ruins.
The thing to know is that there are two entrances here. You have to find the one with the rats in it, and then go directly to the chest. The chest is a trap that will teleport you to a mine called Sellia Crystal Tunnel. You don’t need to defeat anything here. Just keep running and then go down into the mine. Once you exit, you’ll be in Swamp of Aeonia.
Upgrading Your Weapons
Now, whatever weapon you’re going to use to defeat Mohg, you’ll need to upgrade it. Here, we need to upgrade our weapon, Halo Scythe, and as long as it’s upgraded to at least +8, you can beat this boss relatively early.
Boss Battle Strategy
During the boss fight, Mohg will deal a ton of damage, and there’s no way to avoid it other than to keep drinking Healing Potions. Not only will he regenerate his health, he’ll immediately become more aggressive and start spewing red flames everywhere.
This phase is particularly frustrating, and every time you think you’ve mastered their moves, they’ll pull off a new trick and suddenly you’re back to square one. There is a solution, though, and that’s to get Purifying Crystal Tear.
How To Find Purifying Crystal Tear?
To get this Crystal Tear, you’ll need to complete Yura Questline.
Go to this location on the map near Murkwater Cave under the river, and enemies will invade you. Shortly after the enemies appear, Yura will appear to help you out. You can either let Yura do all the fighting, or you can step in and help.
After defeating this enemy, continue down the same path, and you’ll find Yura on the right. If he’s not there, you can go to Sites of Grace to rest up first, then come back and talk to him. You’ll find him in front of the main gate of Raya Lucaria Academy.
Go up to the bridge and you will find a red summon sign. Press it and you will have to help Yura invade and defeat the enemy. After that, Yura will be in the same place on the bridge. Talk to him and he will reward you with some Smithing Stones.
Then, you will also find Yura in Second Church of Marika. You will find him lying on the ground, dying. Talk to him and as soon as you finish, an enemy will invade you. If you defeat this enemy, you will get Purifying Crystal Tear as a reward.
You can add this Crystal Tear to your flask. When you fight Mohg, drink the flask before he starts to launch a large attack or when his health is halfway. This will remove his debuffs and allow you to enter when he launches an attack to cause more damage.
All in all, this Purifying Crystal Tear will allow you to win this battle easily. Of course, if you are very good at the game, you can beat him without Crystal Tear, but it will make a huge difference.
Outro
As far as I am concerned, with these methods, we defeated him very easily without even using any summons. I just kept my distance and let Halo Scythe do the work for me. With this guide in hand, you can do the same easily. Good luck!
